Re: Does it make sense to continue with the same strategy with this JPY/USD rate?
With the Yen at 158 I think I speak for us all when I say that this is a miserable situation and I hope the trend reverses soon.

Re: Taxation of 'accumulation' ETF in Japan
I looked into this a while back and the answer seems to be no - Japan does not tax 'deemed' dividends from such ETFs. I hold multiple Irish-domiciled 'dividend accumulating' ETFs listed on the LSE and use an accountant to do my taxes and my accountant also agrees these ETFs are only subject to capit...

No physical cash exchanged when we paid the down-payment on our place. All done by wire transfer as one would expect.

Re: Furusato Amazon is coming!
I worry that Amazon's entry will herald the end of the furusato good times - it is one thing for Japanese companies to make out like bandits arbitraging the processing and delivery costs of these transactions which is ultimately coming out of tax revenues - it is another thing if a US company starts...

Re: Furusato Amazon is coming!
Furusato nozei is insanity for the Japanese government. I'm shocked it hasn't been shut down yet. But I hope it does live on as we make very full use of it. This is the site I use https://www.furusato-tax.jp/?header and they produce a nice XML file of all the donations which I was able to send dire...

Just wanted to say thank you for sharing this information. Having the full tsumitate portion come out of my credit card just makes life that much simpler - the smidgen of points just being the icing on the cake.

Re: About New NISA system in Rakuten
Found it 平均取得価額の計算方法について https://www.rakuten-sec.co.jp/web/support/tax/specific/#specific-08 Thank you - looks like they take the average cost basis. So the NISA units (0 capital gains) will be merged with the non-NISA units (with capital gains) and the cost basis will be averaged between the two w...

Re: About New NISA system in Rakuten
I have a different but maybe related question about the new NISA in Rakuten. Actually it is more about the old 2019 NISA that ended on Dec 31. I buy emaxis slim all country both in my NISA and also my tokutei account in Rakuten. Now that the 2019 NISA wrapper has come out it seems that both the 2019...

Re: Tokutei koza - what if the broker screwed up?
I don't know the specific answer to your question but Japan has very strong consumer protections and, even if the broker disclaimed such liability in their terms of service, it is highly likely that they would end up being required to indemnify any affected investors from unpaid tax liabilities. So ...
