Re: Best budgeting app?
Still happily using MoneyTree; just noting that they limited the data to the past 12 months in the free plan.

Using tenki.jp and its terrific App on iOS. Love the hourly rain forecast re probability AND mm amount. Also enjoy the rain radar with its projection calculation.

Re: What is going on with Interactive Brokers Japan? Any updates?
Hi gaijin86. I'm still on the original IB LLC and haven't had any suggestion of being migrated. I was living in slight fear for all of last year following the news that people were being shifted to the Japanese version but I personally haven't had any correspondence to suggest I will be moved. Same...

Re: Recent recommendations for home insurance 火災保険?
Hi Adamakin86,
I am in the same camp and use Nisshinfire which I happily found through kakaku.com:
https://direct.nisshinfire.co.jp/oheya/
The whole process is only and suprisingly smooth for Japan!
Never had a claim so far though, so not fire-tested, just UI tested
Hope that helps.

Re: Transferring funds to IBKR cheaply? SMBC was VERY expensive
Hi kanpanela, only looked into this post now again and see that you made some more attempts with interesting results. Thanks for sharing. To complete the picture, just replies to the two open queries raised: Perhaps sending to such non-resident accounts is not considered an international transfer fo...

Re: Transferring funds to IBKR cheaply? SMBC was VERY expensive
In your case it was a Japanese account which allowed for a domestic transfer, whereas in my case it was an American account which required an international transfer. I am not sure I fully concur with your conclusions. Please note that the above assumption is false. While I do transfer JPY->JPY it i...

Re: SIM/eSIM (Europe)
+1 vote for eSIM with Airalo - I travel overseas almost every month and works seamlessly in every destination. I’ve probably saved thousands of dollars over these years versus paying roaming charges with SoftBank. I second Airalo - used by multiple family members & friends - easy and reasonably...

Re: Transferring funds to IBKR cheaply? SMBC was VERY expensive
Hi Kanpanela, I use IBKR LLC and frequently transfer JPY->JPY from SMBC [Olive] to IBKR's Citibank Account in Japan with 10 digit account number (=non-resident account) for a fee of JPY 800. There is a whole thread on transferring to IBKR: https://www.retirejapan.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=688&st...

Re: Renter's Insurance
Hi KansaiKen,
I pay JPY 4000 p.a. with Nisshin Fire - see https://direct.nisshinfire.co.jp/oheya/
Found that through kakaku.com and like Nisshin's online interface which is quite modern.
Hope that helps.

Re: Prestia ATM fee policy change from Oct 2023
Re free transfers: SMBC Olive comes with 3 fee free transfers each month.
Like their App and multi function card approach.
Hence moved my usual operations from Prestia over.
