FBAR

Post by Gloria »

I am going to be doing FBAR soon for last year. It is my first time doing this. Any helpful hints or things to be aware of? I looked at the website and saw that I have to put the addresses of the banks. In the case of the postal savings, I only see the main Tokyo office. Is that ok? Tempted to just dig a hole in the backyard and bury my money!

I think the main Tokyo office address should be okay for your postal account. It is hard to find addresses for a lot of online financial firms as well and I actually just the the corporate headquarters for accounts at firms like Rakuten.

Yes, I don't have JP, but my local Shinsei branch closed a few years ago--now I use their Tokyo HQ.

It's kind of a pain filing the FBAR the first time if you've got numerous bank accounts in Japan. They ask for addresses (as you noted), account numbers and balances. I think it's best to annotate the highest account balance for the year for each account you have. The second go round of filing is much smoother as you know what to annotate, though. Best of luck.
