First time poster and US citizen living in Japan who recently passed the 5 year mark so it's time to start reporting my worldwide income. This is my first time having to deal with the 年末調整 (nenmatsu chousei) and 確定申告 (kakutei shinkoku). I already filled out the 年末調整 for my employer at the end of last year and I reported my US bank interest (which due to the weak yen became rather substantial) but I've got a pension deduction from the money I paid into it while I was between jobs and a sale in a taxable investment account that I forgot to inform them of so I need to file the 確定申告.
My main question is, do I have to report all of the same things on the 確定申告 that I already reported on the 年末調整? Do I have to report the US interest income again or do I not have to because I already got the tax adjustment from my company which took that into account.
Hope someone can help with this. Thanks!

Basically, yes. The 確定申告 overrides the 年末調整. But you get a 給与所得の源泉徴収票 from your employer which contains the details of the tax they already withheld based on the 年末調整. If you submit the tax return using eTax, it walks you through entering the details from this so you don't have to figure it all out from scratch.FormerTohoku wrote: ↑Thu Mar 06, 2025 8:38 am do I have to report all of the same things on the 確定申告 that I already reported on the 年末調整?

Oh, okay. I didn't realize that the figures in the 給与所得の源泉徴収票 took my 年末調整 into account. Makes a lot more sense now. Thanks!
