UK driving licence question

Hi all,
Just a little confused about this.
I have uk driving licence which expires in about 8 years.
I've been living in Japan since 2021 and currently have a license on a 2 year update program.
I understand you can't put your Japanese address on your uk license, but for visiting home and hiring a car, how does this work?
I've read the uk license becomes invalid.
How can we drive back in uk ?
