There is nothing new here I suppose. If you are in are not a full-time employee you definitely need to consider contributing as much as you can to iDeco and Nisa.

The author seems to recommend not relying on pension in old age, which sounds like a decent approach.

Those low-income workers with part-time jobs working full-time hours are in a really tough position. There seems to be little help or support for them.

I guess they end up on 生活保護, which may or may not be available to foreign residents.

The answer is no. There's some allowances for permanent residents or special activities visas but strictly, the Japanese government isn't compelled to support foreigners by law.

That's what I meant. Right now local governments can choose to provide welfare to non-Japanese, but don't have to.

Not a great foundation for retirement planning!
