Japanese companies that you can use

Post by jeronimoski »

Hey all,

Besides Rakuten and SBI, are there any other places where an expat can open an account that has access to the US market?

Regarding Vanguard, I was able to set up my account just fine. I used my US mailing address that's still available and was able to buy ETF shares.

Pretty much any stock broker provides access to US markets. Whether you're an expat or not is irrelevant, however being a US citizen is problematic because of the US tax laws.

Yes I know about Americans. I am not going to buy mutual funds or non-US stuff. I want to buy stocks and ETFs, so I don't need a personal broker. My question is, what companies allow you to sign up and then buy into the US market besides Rakuten and SBI.

Nomura allows me to purchase US (and other foreign) securities through my account. They apply a very unfavorable exchange rate (it was around 115 yen/dollar when I made my experimental trade a few months ago while the actual exchange rate was just 106 yen/dollar) and charged an additional 2000 yen commission on top of their already expensive commission. I'm currently looking in to opening Rakuten and/or SBI accounts.

Ouch. Good to know about Nomura. People need to know that.
