Good day everyone,
I live in Japan, speak some Japanese but do not read kanji at all.
Want to open local brokerage account for Nisa purposes.
Tried this couple years ago and was told everywhere that I need to read some kanji papers to sign up.
Did situation change since then? Maybe some brokers made the life easier, for customers, and do not require kanji? Are they needed at all, to just buy some indexes regularly...
Btw my wife speaks Japanese and has her brokerage account (don't recall which one, maybe SBI). Does this help? Can she just open another account online, on my name? Anything to avoid that kanji reading myself.
Ideally, I'd prefer the account which I cold keep in case I leave Japan, even without having Nisa, means I wouldn't have to close my account upon leaving. But the local account, not IB or something (since they don't allow Nisa).
Thanks!!!

You can open accounts online now. If your wife helps you navigate the process, you should be okay. You have to read and agree to the terms and conditions in Japanse, but no one is checking whether you actually do it.

Oh thanks heavens!!! Shall try
Any recommendation for a particular broker, maybe? More or less "gaijin friendly" or just good balance of price/securities choice (like, most popular among forum users). But main purpose is to keep account active/ open even in case of leaving Japan

This is not allowed unless you are leaving temporarily on a work assignment.HeavyMetal wrote: ↑Mon Apr 07, 2025 7:52 am But main purpose is to keep account active/ open even in case of leaving Japan

Really? That's a shame...RetireJapan wrote: ↑Mon Apr 07, 2025 8:18 am This is not allowed unless you are leaving temporarily on a work assignment.
Does that mean assets need to be sold, upon leaving?
Isn't there at least an option to transfer assets to "ordinary" account, like, within same broker? So that assets can be sold later if needed, incl. from abroad
BTW I'll probably go with SB or MonexI, if that matters.
Also, I plan to keep my Japan residence card, by periodically visiting Japan. If that matters too.

Yes, assets need to be sold.HeavyMetal wrote: ↑Mon Apr 07, 2025 3:43 pm

No, you cannot keep assets in a broker account and sell later from abroad.
Aiming to retire at 60 and live for a while longer. 95% index funds (eMaxis Slim etc), 5% Japanese dividend stocks.

True
Just called Monex and asked bout that. Even though assets can be transferred to ordinary account, they cannot be sold while being abroad, which means all this transferring deal useless. What a lame brokerage here

Not entirely true btw. SBI, Nomura & Monex only allow account opening by mail, for foreigners. I applied online, but need to wait for their "letters" now. And then send them documents back, by post...
Not sure about Rakuten, but basically everything is same, here, so probably same.

Sorry I meant online as in without needing to talk to someone. There is an extra step for non-Japanese residents where they send you some pre-filled in paperwork to sign.HeavyMetal wrote: ↑Tue Apr 08, 2025 4:22 amNot entirely true btw. In the past some brokers would phone you up to confirm details and if your Japanese wasn't up to scratch your application could be rejected. I don't think anyone does that any more.
