I normally use USD
If you have a USD income source, that makes sense. You were talking about GBP above, so if you had a cheaper alternative I wanted to know about it 🧐

The GBP was just what Wise was showing when I grabbed the quote. Sorry to mislead you.

If I dont have the local currency in my Wise account (say I have USD, but not Yen), is it better for me to convert into Yen before using the card here?

Or is it OK to let Wise automatically do the conversion? (This would assume the conversion rate would be about the same, whether I do it or they do it).

Thanks.

Last time I went abroad I used my Mastercard CC and paid it all off in one go. So no interest, but I guess I got screwed on the exchange rate. Is the wise *much* cheaper as a debit card?

Suggest using the Revolut App & Card. Same principle, but higher free allowance per month. Look into it, setup is also free and easy.

I used Wise to transfer money from Japanese account to a friend account in a foreign country. No issue.
Then, I transferred Euro from my european bank account to the Wise Euro Pocket and I used their virtual card to buy tickets for train and other stuff through internet sales websites. Very satisfied so far.
Next step is to use their physical card and also to try to transfer money to Japanese bank account.
