Selling 2024 NISA Growth Funds and Immediately Rebuying Question (Rakuten)

Post by RetireIn10 »

Hello friends,

I would like to sell all of my "growth" NISA investments that I obtained in 2024. Is it possible to sell all of the growth and reinvest it all again in the following week? I made a mistake in investing in MXS Worldwide Stocks (2559) instead of eMaxis Slim.

If it is possible to reinvest in 2024, can someone please direct me to how? I've looked on the Rakuten Securities website and can't find an option.

Yes, this is very simple. You can sell your current investments.

Once the transaction clears and the money is in your account, you can buy new investments in your 2025 NISA account.

It Depends.

You can Sell.

When you sell, your NISA Lifetime Limit will be credited back with the Original Purchase Cost of Units/Assets Sold. Not the Sale Proceeds.

You will be able to Buy to the Annual Limits of Y1.2M in Tsumitate NISA, and Y2.4M in Growth Portion of NISA in 2025.

You will not be able to buy in Tsumitate NISA if you have already committed to the maximum Monthly Contributions of Y100,000 per month for the entire 2025. You would be able to top up Tsumitate NISA if you have NOT already committed to the maximum Monthly Contributions.

You will not be able to Reinvest the Proceeds from the Sale AND an additional Y2.4M for 2025 in Growth NISA, and you will not be able to reinvest the entire Proceeds from the Sale if that exceeds Y2.4M...
If you invested Y2.4M and it grew by 30% to Y3.12M, you would only be able to reinvest Y2.4M of that Y3.12M back into Growth NISA, and you would have to invest the remaining Y720k elsewhere, maybe into a Taxable Investment Account; Tokutei or Regular, and you would not be able to invest any addition funds into Growth NISA for 2025.

It is not possible to reinvest in 2024.

If you can max out your NISA for 2025 with 'new' money, selling the 2024 funds does not generally make sense.
If you cannot, maybe it makes sense to sell the 2024 funds and buy new ones in 2025.
Aiming to retire at 60 and live for a while longer. 95% index funds (eMaxis Slim etc), 5% Japanese dividend stocks.

This was very helpful. Thank you.
