*I do need to use a different line at airport immigration and can't use the biometric gates. I expect that will change and it doesn't impact my overall journey time as I'm sure my luggage is invisibly tagged with "low priority".
Don't tell everyone but there is an automatic gate available to non-Japanese residents as well. Just need to register for it. It is always empty and faster than the re-entry line.
Is that this one? Have you used it?

Step seven of how to use the automated gates is the best part:

The last time I looked into this I thought you still needed to have an immigration official inspect/admin that little bit of paper in your passport. Has that changed?
I’ve honestly never had to wait more than moments at the “in-person” reentry line.(Or “concierge line” as I’m going to rebrand it..)
But I would love a detailed explanation of the exact steps you follow at both departure and arrival if registered for those gates. Do the gates read your fingerprints? Do you feel a small prick on the back of your neck? Is there a small passage of time you can’t recall?
Because each time I’ve asked someone they’ve been unable to recall precisely what happens to my satisfaction. Which obviously makes me think there is some MIB technology in those electronic gates the authorities don’t want us to know about.
Look. I’m not saying we’ll be triggered to shoot a visiting president. Maybe something more subtle like “manga isn’t just comics” or “blood type might determine character”..

Haha. Yes, that's it. 'Automated' is definitely a relative term...
Makes me feel like a VIP when the immigration guy appears, as if by magic, just to take care of me.
Ffs. Thx.
In that case I’m going to resist until the electronic gate offers some value added service like health screening..
I remembered now. One main reason I registered was because they don't stamp your passport if you go through that 'automated' gate. I was running low on pages and the UK govt stopped allowing extra pages, so I did it to avoid getting a new passport prematurely.
Sadly, no prostate exam is included however.

The reentry line is always pretty short, so I have no real complaints.
I used to bitch about how I had to be fingerprinted, and citizens didn't, but now everyone has their face in The System.
My past experience with that auto gate was it refused to read my fingerprints the first three attempts, then then once through the officer looks at my passport anyway. If the auto-gate starts working the way it should that would be a small plus.
