It was a valid point that you can't charge without the app, though.

I sometimes use mobile suica if IC card is the only payment method other than cash.

This is my wallet (purchased randomly in a shop when the old one was getting a bit worse for wear). Lots of cards, no coins.

you can still charge it using the ticket machines at the station or atm/konbini - the ones which you put on your card/phone/watch instead of inserting it

That's style of ticket machine is not universal, and those who are "cashless" are not exactly able to take advantage of them!

People literally had to text friends or colleagues to bring them cash...

Point is, at least stick a 1000 yen bill under your phonecase for emergencies.

Those poor people, who tried to travel with a mobile Suica with no cash loaded on it, who weren’t able to use any of the reload machines nor ask the staff at the station for help.. and who didn’t have a credit card or any cash on them…. Must have been terrible… I suspect it affected literally tens of people for a few hours on a single day.

The outage knocked out credit card payment as well. Cash was the only option for awhile.

You can withdraw cash from a bank account (or even credit cards) la. Most stations have an ATM close by. I’m not sure why you are trying to portray this as some kind of disaster but it clearly wasn’t.

Bankcard, credit card, cash, sure would be handy to have that all with you. Maybe in some sort of walletike contraption?

Best to carry around a cheque book, cheque guarentee card, some US dollars and a bit of gold too - just in case the ATMs fail, the Suica system fails, the yen becomes worthless and people don't accept fiat money anymore so precious metals are the only way you can buy your 200 yen to get home....

some banks nowadays (sbi net, paypay, and probably others) support atm usage just by scanning qr code from their app ;) (also known as "スマホATM")

Oh absolutely, that is nice when it is supported.

Bottom line, 99% of us at least need to have a Gaijin card on us at all time. A 1man and 1000 yen note present no real extra bulk or weight in addition to this.

Keep it in your bag, case, under your phone, in your key case, in your...shoe?

I mean if an earthquake, disaster or an I.T issue hits, you probably want some cash. To me it seems like such a no brainier.
