Offtopic - Japanese Language Advice

Post by Tsumitate Wrestler »

It is New Year's Resolutions season is upon us. I did well last year except for one big thing....

I need to get my Japanese in order. However, I need structure and accountability.

Can someone give me a specific recommendation for a tutor that assesses ability, and designs study plans to meet that student's goals? Not just a standard "Ekawia" style lesson? More of a college-style instruction perhaps.

Any platform is fine, non-natives are fine.

....

(I work full-time and have 2 kids so, online is the best fit).

We use https://cotoacademy.com/ at work, people seem pretty happy with it (including me).

I think if you can't be accountable to yourself, that's the problem, though 👨🏼‍🏫

Check the Japanese Courses at Temple University

You probably want to look for Japanese for Business or Japanese for Specific Purposes, rather than general Japanese language courses.

Not with language study. Working full-time in English, and with 2 kids and an English native-speaking wife. I have got my life sorted now, except for this. But I do not have the time to create a structured environment, I want to offload the planning and scheduling and focus on the acquisition.

Thank you for the link.

I have reason to be skeptical about anything related to Temple Japan. Can you vouch for the quality? It also does not seem individualized.

If you’re happy with online lessons, I would recommend Italki. There are many very experienced Japanese tutors on there offering one-on-one lessons at very reasonable rates that should, I would think, be able to provide personalised lessons to suit your level and timetable.

I have to agree with this. When we have kids, and of course we want our kids to communicate in English, then go to work for hours end and speak English, and NEVER BE ALLOWED toSPEAK JAPANESE, in case you get chastised by the company, and then go home absolutely pooped out. It can be hard to pick up that book and "study".When we're single, free, and no responsibility. YEP, crank open that book! So I feel your pain. Also some people do have learning issues. eg Dyslexia, ADHD, etc

Another good and Free Resource -

NHK Radio Channel R2

https://www.nhk.or.jp/radio/player/?ch=r2

Download the Smartphone Application: Rajiru! Rajiru!

You can then listen anywhere you have an Internet Connection.

Listen when you can to the English language classes (repeated a couple of times per day and Omnibus on weekends), in reverse, as they explain and translate everything in natural Japanese...
