American Investor

Post by japanlifer »

Last month my [Japanese] wife and I both open Rakuten Securities accounts. When it came to opening NISA accounts I wasn't sure what to do so she opened a regular NISA and I [American] opened a Tsumitate NISA. I am thinking that we got it backward and she should have the Tsumitate NISA because of the bonds. Originally, I thought I could stick cash in there, but that seems like an iDeCo.

Are there benefits to sticking with a Tsumitate?

American's can't invest in Japanese mutual funds, which pretty much rules out both Tsumitate NISA and iDeCo for you.

If your wife is a US Green Card holder, she could be ruled out too....

Also, there are no pure bond funds available with Tsumitate Nisa.

I might be jumping the gun here, but if you're here long enough to naturalize, and [judging by your screen name] you're here for life, then that would be one way to allow you to leverage the accounts properly.
