Re: Japan pension
Any insight why the US is a special outlier in this respect? It depends on the social security agreement between the two countries. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/state-pensions-annual-increases-if-you-live-abroad/countries-where-we-pay-an-annual-increase-in-the-state-pension Thank you.

Re: Japan pension
Maybe I’m missing something here, but what special Triple Lock applies to your aunt that is not given to UK citizens living elsewhere in the world? I was under the impression the Triple Lock was applied worldwide to the state pension, not just to those residing in certain countries (the USA?)? Mana...

Re: Japan pension
I keep on telling my Aunt who lives in America, who has dual nationality and a national insurance number, she is laughing all the way to the bank because she gets the Triple lock upgrade unlike Brits residing in Canada, Australia or Japan. Maybe I’m missing something here, but what special Triple L...

Re: Q: obtaining UK passport for child born in Japan (UK/Japanese parents)
I would also suggest you register your child for the UK Consular Birth Certificate. Whilst it cannot be used for a Passport Application, it will serve as life-long proof of your child's British Citizenship. https://www.gov.uk/register-birth-abroad I did this for the first child then didn't bother f...

Re: Investing in stocks to “play with” anticipated taxes from funds
He is hoping to have to pay a lot more tax with his strategy. He hopes to hit a moonshot and find a ten or hundred bagger, outside of his index funds. This will obviously incur a higher CGT liability. Thanks deep blue - a very eloquent summary of my thinking here. Appreciate everyone’s thoughts and...

Re: Investing in stocks to “play with” anticipated taxes from funds
Thanks for your replies - we are talking totally outside of NISA here (think if NISA didn’t exist - that’s a totally separate investment package). So this is offsetting the taxes from taxable account EMaxis Slim profits on purchases above NISA limit with potential losses from higher risk “lotto tick...

Investing in stocks to “play with” anticipated taxes from funds
As an investor I’m a boring Emaxis Slim All Country evangelist; and am in the privileged position to be able to invest over my NISA limit annually. Let’s say for arguments sake: I invest JPY 400,000 per month in my taxable account for 25 years at an anticipated 7% return including dividends, there w...

Re: PR Application - Experience
What are people’s thoughts on NOT getting PR due to the downsides? As far as I can figure out there are two: exposure to exit tax and ability to sponsor overseas staff when on certain visas (eg domestic helpers). I have a mortgage and finance here with current status, and whilst I’d like the “guaran...

Re: Medication, Generic V Brand medication.
Never buy OTC drugs in Japan if you can avoid it. Agree OTC drugs in Japan are horrifically expensive, but a least you can include them as part of medical expenses in your tax return, which can cut the net cost up to around 50%. That makes a massive box of some 100+ ibuprofen tablets ¥300-400. Not ...
