Chance to comment to IRS about PFIC (until Nov 19)

From Democrats abroad, but of course this is for all expat Americans: This week you can contact the IRS to tell them to fix the regime that punitively taxes investments for Americans abroad. This comment period only comes once every 3 years so act quickly, deadline Nov 19. Click here to tell the IRS...

Re: Furusato nozei changes from October

Grapes are in season right now. I highly recommend grapes but I am biased because I am the farmer who grows them. :D If you search "カナダ人農園主" on your furosato site you might see my grapes. We are currently selling them on 3 of the furosatonozei sites. I can confirm the shain muscat are ver...

Re: Which Rakuten Card?

I've got the Premium, mainly for Priority Pass. Not sure if I will keep it in 2025 since I may not get more than 3-4 chances to use the lounge access. They are also increasing the guest fee from ¥3,300 to $35 (¥5,000?), which is definitely not worth it. 「プライオリティ・パス」の会員証は、2025年1月より、「プライオリティ・パス メンバーズシ...

Re: Wise now has a Tier 1 license: large transfers coming soon

I set up Wise a month ago. At first is was a pain and I had questions, but the chat function (live person) could answer them. Was able to send ¥50,000 and ¥5,000 (via Mizuho) to Europe quickly and for around ¥150 in fees each time. I forsee our Prestia Digital Gold account being closed in the future...

Re: Revolut - Beware

I read an article on the BBC news as well.
Seems a lot of younger people are using it, at least in Europe.

She's at more risk as I handle all her accounts
So when you gonna do the runner? :?
He'd never withdraw everything as the pain of the capital gains tax hit would be too much to bear.

Heron Catchers

I just finished the Heron Catchers by David Joiner.

Having been to Yamanaka Onsen/Kanazawa made it a fun read for me.

The protagonist's wife empties his bank account and runs off leaving him broke and unemployed. The stuff that gives expats nightmares of course.

Re: Car insurance for drivers with Japanese & International licenses

Whether your car insurance will cover someone else driving your car is something that you may, or may not, have opted for when signing up for your insurance. Spouse is always covered (I think), but after that a person might select (or de-select) further options. Eg, I don't insure our kids as drive...

Re: When to take your Japanese pension?

Since I've already started collecting pension (as have some others), me for a number of years now, how should I vote? It might be more inclusive (respect for the elderly?!?) to have separate sections in the list of choices--one for people looking at pensions prospectively, another for those who are...

Re: When to take your Japanese pension?

Appologies.
I see there was already a poll on this in 2021.
