Re: Rethinking emergency funds
So if you have to use this emergency money for, say, a flight home, do you stop investing to top it up again?

Re: Rethinking emergency funds
If the yen were to strengthen significantly right when my emergency struck (or the US defaults or something and bonds crash), I might take a loss, but so be it. That's how I'm thinking. I have my own business so it's not like I can lose my job. I invest just over ¥3m a year. If I agree that a lump ...

Re: Rethinking emergency funds
Many thanks for your replies. Priceless. I’m just thinking it through and different opinions are very useful. I get what you’re all saying and I see your points. It’s like deciding the best allocation on a spider graph. I believe you’re all in the accumulation phase and not about to retire. Maybe wh...

Re: n00b question: what is this 50,000 yen difference?
This was an annoyance when I was trying to sell and rebuy in new NISA in December. I forget the exact details but it was something like I sold 80 Apple shares hoping to immediately rebuy the same amount, but couldn't, even at the same price, because of that buffer. By the time the sale had been proc...

Rethinking emergency funds
I don’t want to be that guy, but I’ve been thinking about the emergency fund. I think I should have a million in the bank just in case I need it tomorrow. But even then I’m not sure what I would need money that quickly for. But even if I did, I could use credit card(s). Having millions in the bank s...

Re: So who's actually retired in Japan?
An English-speaking retirement village would be nice. If we declared independence, we could have some greenery, too. It'd take some getting used to living with foreigners, though.

Re: March net worth update
It was a 'comfort thing' when I declined to buy more All Country in the new year because it was at an all time high. Guess what. It continued higher. So I bought higher. You either time the market or you don't. That is timing, but your message is always not to do so. So which is it? If you are no l...

Re: March net worth update
Investing is a bit like losing weight. It's very simple and the actual steps of eating less, eating healthier and doing more exercise are not rocket science. Same with long term investing - buy a simple low cost diversified passive equity fund and then don't touch it. However, in practise it is har...

Re: March net worth update
After some thought, I have cashed out 1/3 of our 2024 gains. It is about two years' worth of living expenses, so will make a difference if we get a crash or the yen strengthens. If things keep going up then we'll make slightly less money but I think it is worth that tradeoff. I see no issue with th...
