Had not heard about this as a possibility before. H&R expat taxes has been e-filing for me with Married filing separately the last 2 years. In the TIN spot they just write NAR.

Thank you for the link to that tax guide that will be good reading. I am a US citizen so expect to have some extra tax paperwork each year. This helps give some direction on what that is going to look like!

With 0 income the NHI (for my area in Tokyo) looks like it would come down to 56,400yen/year or 4,700 yen / month so that's a nice change.

I also did not know about the nenkin exemption thank you for pointing that out!
