Self Employed - Employment Insurance

I have only been self employed for a few years working for a few companies and the last two years have essentially been an external contractor to one company with no other income streams now or pending.

I briefly investigated employment insurance when I realized it was not within the paperwork that I had been paying after about two years solo and was put of by hearsay on forums claiming of high premiums with some suggesting it just wasn`t worth it.

Now with a great deal of uncertainty and not sure if current contract will hold out or not, I am kind of regretting not investigating further and now wondering if it is even worthwhile taking out a policy!

I have been self employed for last 4 years of about 15 years working here. All other times was under employment insurance. Would past hold any benefit and/or would there be any benefit of taking out a policy now?

Unfortunately, there is no unemployment insurance available for freelancers or company directors.
