2025 New NISA Terms and Conditions

Post by Darren »

Happy New Year Everyone!

Today, I noticed some updates to the NISA terms and conditions that took effect on January 1st. Could someone please clarify what these changes mean, especially for contributors who lose their residency, such as Japanese individuals who have moved abroad? Thank you!

I think this is a more approachable summary.

If I'm reading it right, it says if you move abroad temporarily you can submit a form that lets you keep the NISA going for up to 5 years (otherwise you'd have to close it). When you come back you can submit another form to stop the clock. If you don't submit the 2nd form by the end of the 5th year, everything is moved to a non-tax protected regular 普通口座 account.

You cannot buy/add new investments to the NISA while abroad, but you can keep the existing ones.
