I have about ¥300,000 to spend on my newly opened 2018 NISA. Does anyone have any suggestions for some good funds I can buy?

I think markets may decline over the next 5 years, so I'd rather have something low risk and low return.

I will do due diligence, etc. Just looking for some ideas

I always just buy dividend-paying stocks or whole market index funds. Boring but makes for an easy choice

A few classics in the (almost) whole market index funds category:

eMAXIS Slim 全世界株式(除く日本)
eMAXIS Slim 先進国株式インデックス

If you want to add some Japan exposure (both funds exclude Japan), you can also add a bit of

eMAXIS Slim 国内株式(TOPIX)

The eMaxis Slim funds are very low-cost and my go-to index fund.

Want less risk? How about adding bonds in the mix:

I'm definitely going to put some in a US index, but I'm not confident enough to do 100%

I like your optimism - only wish I shared it.

Anyway, American stocks make up over 50% of a global market weight index so if you buy the funds Ben recommends you will still get good US exposure. If America's share goes down, you will have the natural hedge of international exposure. Win-win.
