Returning to Australia

Post by Tokyo Money »

I have been living in Japan for 25 years and am returning to Australia next February. At this point I have about 10 years of contributions to the national pension system (kokumin nenkin) from when I was a part-timer, and about 8 to private Japanese university pension plans when I was working for them full-time. I worked in Australia for 10 years and paid into super before I came to Japan. Does anyone have advice for how to get my Japanese benefits when I am back in Australia? I won't be 60 when I get there, but eventually, I'd like to accesss something.

You can claim your Japanese nenkin from anywhere in the world. I would create a Nenkin Net account if you don't have one already and keep your nenkin number in a safe place. From 65 you can claim your pension (or as early as 60 if you are willing to get less).

It's not going to be particularly generious, but better than nothing.
