UK Non-resident Landlord self-assessment
Hi UK Non-resident Landlord,
How are you doing your self~assessment? Do you use third-party software or submit a hard copy? I only have one property and looks pretty simple so I was thinking to submit it a hard copy. Alternatively, if you a third-party software user, I would like to know what software to use.
Thank in advance

My wife uses the paper forms. The actual work to fill in doesn’t take long, probably no more than an hour if you keep the receipts and invoices in good order.

My wife also does the paper forms, but I think once it goes over the tax allowance, I might sign her up with a Gateway account. The yearly rent is likely to go over the allowance this tax year.

Unfortunately my wife doesn’t have a National Insurance number so no option for us to do it online (and no tax free allowance either!)

So the conclusion is that my wife should be doing it. Seriously, if your Japanese spouse has lived in the UK and has a National insurance number, they also have a personal allowance? Also, going off topic here, but would they also be able to make voluntary contributions on her state pension?

Only do what? Pay into the UK state pension? You can pay voluntarily for as long as you want, also back-pay to some extent, as long as you paid national insurance for a minimum number of years while you lived there. This is irrespective of nationality, so some Japanese spouses can and do pay into the UK state pension from Japan.workbalance wrote: ↑Mon Jul 15, 2024 6:02 am I just googled my own question and it looks like your can only do if for years you a resident in the UK.

How many years do you need to have lived in the UK to qualify for voluntary contributions? Should I just apply and see what happens?

Basically three. The eligibility criteria are in the wiki:workbalance wrote: ↑Mon Jul 15, 2024 11:00 am How many years do you need to have lived in the UK to qualify for voluntary contributions?

If you meet the requirements then yes. You'd be daft not to
