Good NYT article on/by/about retirees

Here's a nice (pre-print) article about retirement. I forget when it was, or the article that stimulated it, but at some point I wrote/submitted a brief story of my retirement here in Japan, and maybe the trajectory that led to it. They didn't use that, and I'm not even one of the brief quotes they've blended in at certain points. ;) Ah, well... I do feel like I participated, an even if just a little.

It's nice reading, and I hope you enjoy it.

Thanks for sharing. (Amazing portrait photography BTW.)
I’m still “desperately seeking severance” to launch my retirement and frankly. I probably shouldn’t have read that article in one go.

These people are demonstrably more productive in their retired lives than I am in my working one.

And can we just take a moment to acknowledge this:
“ I now work on one Innocence Project case and the rest of my time, I hammer hot steel”

Because if ‘retiree blacksmith for justice’ isn’t the TV genre the world has been crying out for I don’t know what is.

What’s that? There are already competing shows with this exact format!!

A common thread in those articles is that all the people featured seem to be rather, shall we say, "financially assured."

Sorry, but was that a corny advert for an American investment firm? It's like parody we see in movies.

"The people who grew up with the Mouseketeers are now becoming re-imagineers."

Huh? I need a translator.

I think the audience for this article is pretty limited to American retirees, the language is very "boomer coded".

I found American retirement coverage pretty shocking: Usually a mix of....

" I have 3.4 million saved in various accounts and I own my home, can I comfortably retire at 65?, I am worried about social security and health care costs"

or

"I have 0 dollars and for retirements, I have $200,000 dollars in debt from a B.A in psychology, I have credit card and car debt, my plan is to die on the Walmart floor working as a greeter in my 80s"

Or I have paid off home worth over $2 million but anticipate long-term nursing home care to cost $200,000/year.

Cool, thanks for sharing that NYT article about retirees! Bummer they didn't use your story, but still nice that you got to be a part of it.

Interesting read, but now I would like to see a similar article relating to "foreign" retirees in Japan.
