From FIRE bloggers like MadFientist I have heard that there are ways to withdraw funds from a 401k early in the US.

Does anybody know if this is possible with the Ideco?

Not that I am aware of. Your heirs can get the contents if you die, but that is about it.

I think this is a feature though, as it guarantees you will have some money for your retirement. Of course, making sure you have an emergency fund and other savings/investments is probably a good idea alongside iDeCo.

I believe you can also access the funds early if you are permanently disabled.

You're right! And it seems like it is then completely tax-free: https://xn--79q87uvkclvgd56ahq5a.net/id ... y-benefit/
