US withholding tax on Japan-listed S&P500 fund

Post by RetireJapan »

How does the withholding tax work? Is it taken from each company's dividend at source? If so, is there no way to claim it back?

If not, is this a way of getting round US withholding tax on dividends?

Anyone know?

I think I saw someone of this forum mentioning that it is possible to file for tax return on those (i.e. get back 10% out of 23% tax paid on dividends in Japan).
I don't remember the details, though.

That's quite easy to do with individual US-listed stocks/ETFs, as the tax shows up in your Japanese account. For a Japan-listed fund though, the withholding tax doesn't seem to be shown, but presumably it is getting paid somewhere...

Same with ADR shares in the US like Santander. The 19:5% withholding tax going to Spain doesn't show up anywhere...
