Im about to Open a NISA investment account.
I’m a little unclear about the investment limits for NISA accounts.
I see the investment limit is 1.2 million yen. Does this mean I can invest an additional 1.2 million each year, ie Year 2, have 2.4 million invested, Year 3, 3.6million, etc. or is the maximum 1.2 million to reinvest each year?

Old NISA - This is the Last Year
Max Y1.2M this year, and can stay invested for 5 years
OR (only one or the other)
Old Trumitate NISA - This is the Last Year
Max Y400k this year, and can stay invested for 20 years
New NISA Growth Portion - Next Year is the First Year
Max Y2.4M per year, with no limit on how long it can stay invested.
AND (Both available)
New NISA Trumitate Portion - Next Year is the First Year
Max Y1.2M per year, with no limit on how long it can stay invested.
Max Lifetime Limit of Contributions of Y18M to the New NISA...
The Contribution Allowance is freed up on disposals of assets.

I recommend you open a Tsumitate NISA this year. You can invest ¥400k this year which will be tax free for 20 years.
From next year the system is changing. Your account will be automatically migrated to the new system and you'll get a new allowance for new investments from next year.
Reasoning for the above recommendation and further details are on the wiki:
