Do Both.

You can put up to Y1.2M into NISA OR up to Y400,000 into Tsumitate NISA in 2023 for 5 years.

You can put up to Y2.4M into NISA AND up to Y1.2M into Tsumitate NISA in 2024 and onwards to a maximum lifetime Contribution Allowance of Y18M

The NISA iwll pay out Tax Free.

Tsumitate NISA limit still 400,000 yen in 2023.

(I'm guessing that was a typo)

Invest what you can this year. No real advantage to waiting, as far as I can see.

Hello everyone, I'm new here and happy to find this community and learn about best practices in Japan.

From what I understand, it still makes sense to invest ¥400.000 in old Nisa in 2023 and then start using the new Nisa in 2024 to maximize the investment allowance? Is there any reason to not open a 2023 Nisa while it's still available?

No, assuming you have the money to invest ready to go.

Less than a month left to get it setup though… I wonder if it is possible in such a short time frame.
If one doesn’t already have a NISA, I guess you need to open one for 2024 onwards anyway though.

You will have to be quick if you have not started the process yet. You may possibly be too late for 2023 already.
400,000 is the limit for tsumitate NISA. 1,200,000 for 'regular' NISA.
