Life Insurance - Taxable?

Hi All,

So I have a life insurance which I purchased before moving to Japan. It is one of those policies, where the annual amount which you pay is invested into mutual funds etc. so there is a potential of the amount growing more than your actual coverage amount.

My question is, when I die and the amount is given to my spouse, will she have to pay any tax on this? If yes, what percent are we talking about?

I believe certain types of insurance are tax free, but this may not apply if the policy is not in Japan.

Anyone else?
