I never get thread replies sent to my email. I have everything checked at User Control Panel > Board Prefs > Edit notification options. Is there anything else I should be doing?

Don’t know the answer and as I hate email mine was turned off.
But I just subscribed to this topic. Interestingly, the item to subscribe (click the scanner/wrench icon) was “ticked” to show unsubscribed then I removed the tick to indicate I became subscribed.
In the control panel area I’m set to get notifications and emails if anyone responds to subscribed topics(that could be a default setting..). So if you respond and don’t even quote me I should get notification AND email.

Oooooh. That is completely opposite to how I thought it worked. Huh.

When I click that icon it shows a link saying 'Unsubscribe topic', so I am definitely subscribed.

I canged my email address to test if emails work. But instead of emailing me, it suspended my account and emailed the admin.

I'm back in, so either RetireJapan got the email, or just happened to notice me in an approval queue.

Yeah, I tried to change my email but, of course, didn't get a confirmation email. I assumed in that scenario it would be an 'ignore this email if it wasn't you that requested to change your email' situation, but instead when I tried to login it said my a/c was inactive. I emailed admin and here I am again OK. Think I'll give up and just bookmark relevant topics in my browser.

One thing, though I don't think it's relevant, is that I use an Apple 'Hide My Email' address. It's just an icloud.com address so shouldn't make a difference, and I can email myself at that address no problem.

I suspect the issue is that the forum is being treated as a spam sender and all the email is being automatically ditched.

Back in the day, when phpbb (this forum software) was first created, email was a free for all. Now it's quite a walled garden as almost everyone uses Gmail plus a few other big companies. They're pretty agressive about filtering email from anywhere that's not another big player, so when sending email from WebApps nowadays you basically have to send it via a big provider. It's technically possible to just send the email directly (probably what the forum is doing) but it will most likely get blackholed.

I could be wrong and it could be something else though.

That would explain why I get many errors sending to gmail addresses from my domain a/c. Have to send 3 or 4 times before it's accepted. Had one today with 14 error messages before I gave up.

I use SES on AWS for my stuff. AWS can be a bit scary because you can easily rack up huge runaway expenses if you push the wrong buttons but for just sending a few emails it's effectively free. You can generate SMTP credentials which work with any software. Make sure you set up DKIM/SPF/DMARC.

You can't use AWS for personal email though. For that I think you need to pay a big provider to host your domain's email for you. Maybe check out Migadu if you're just using it for yourself.
