When you applied to your current job, did you tell them your previous salary?

I'm just curious. I did for mine (got the job via recruiter, who was the one who asked) and regretted it afterwards. I'm in the pipeline for a new job now and am being asked, but this time I'm dodging the question since I want them to make a genuine offer, not just a very slight increase on my current moneys. What has been your experience, good or bad?

They didn't ask for my current salary, but desired salary was a required field on the web form so I put 0. I eventually caved in and gave them a figure late in the interview process, which they undercut a bit. I think it's a better negotiating strategy to get them to make the first offer, although I would struggle to insist on this myself. Current salary is not relevant so if they insisted, unless I was desperate for the job I'd probably reconsider if I wanted to work for them.

Wasn't asked! Salary is set scale by age/experience :(
