Edited as I realized how insanely stupid my original question was:
I have yen deposits that I want to put into other currencies.
Other than buying dollars via my bank, which doesn't offer a tax-withholding service, or buying more ETFs such as the Dow Jones etc., how can I hedge against yen weakness? Are there any good dollar MMFs?
Ideally, I want to do this via SBI Securities or Rakuten Securities with them deducting and declaring the tax for me.
I realize the yen is really weak now, but I am not sure if it will ever pick up properly again, as I can't see Japan achieving long-term growth.

?
Yen weakness is your friend if you already own foreign assets. As the Yen gets weaker the foreign assets become worth more and more Yen.
Of course, it's not the best time to buy foreign currencies or foreign assets at the moment...

For the long-term passive investor who makes monthly contributions, continue as normal. Currencies will continue to fluctuate as the decades go on.

If you buy USD in Rakuten, it will sit in your account. The money will be in MMF.ToushiTime wrote: ↑Mon Mar 28, 2022 11:19 pm Edited as I realized how insanely stupid my original question was:

1. Lower to no interest.
2. Not insured like a bank account (but possible insured to a lesser standard).
However, the question would be WHY? Does this need to be liquid?
What not Buy USD then buy treasury notes via Rakuten in USD? Earn some interest.
Re: Easy way to protect against yen weakness
Wait until the Yen strengthens and then buy... in chunks if you want to Dollar Cost Average...

I currently have a tokutei kouza (cash/spot market) 特定口座(現物) and tokutei kanri kouza 特定管理口座 with tax-withholding set to "on" 源泉徴収あり.
To buy USD and then buy Treasury Notes, do I need to open other types of accounts within my Rakuten account e.g. an FX account?
Do they all come with an option for tax-withholding?

Re: Easy way to protect against yen weakness
Thanks for those links. So, I already have a tokutei kouza (genzenchoshu ari). Does that mean I can just go ahead and buy dollar-denominated MMFs and dollar-denominated bonds/Treasuries without creating an FX account or other sub-accounts beforehand? I think I need to open a gaigoku kabushiki account if I want to trade individual overseas stocks (not bonds), correct?Haystack wrote: ↑Wed Mar 30, 2022 5:50 amQ and A - https://www.rakuten-sec.co.jp/web/info/ ... 27-01.htmlToushiTime wrote: ↑Wed Mar 30, 2022 3:49 amThanks Haystack,Haystack wrote: ↑Tue Mar 29, 2022 1:49 pm

When I bought a US domiciled etf with Monex, no extra account was requested.
You
A. Send money to your foreign trading account, which was created automatically upon initial application.
B. You convert YEN->USD
C. Your foreign trading account is credited in USD. Which exist in a USD MMF. (And thus taxed normally, and not like FX holdings).
D. Buy asset in USD on Tradestation.
Now I have never sold anything. but if I did...
E. Sale happens, 20% of capital gains withheld.
F. Funds sit in MMF until you withdraw.
G. You can either 1. Withdraw in Yen or 2. Keep it in a USD MMF funds or possibly 3. Transfer to a USD account elsewhere.
Now there are some very valid reason NOT to keep something in a MMF, and instead get a USD bank account with SONY or the like if you are holding long-term and not reinvesting in USD.
**Note it seems Dividends are paid into the MMF as well.
