Mac

Post by Bubblegun »

My Mac is dead, after 10 years of use by the wife and myself.

Decided to buy the new M1 MacBook Air, (not new, but not used) whatever that means.
Anyway apple gave 15,000 yen discount.πŸ‘πŸ‘.
Interest free monthly payments.πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘.

Could have gone to GEO and got a 6 year old model for 40,000.
So after reading reviews, watching YouTube we decided on the MacBook Air and not the MacBook Pro this time.

Discount+ free monthly installments ( even though I had emergency fund) + plus up to date.

Since my apple is bricked has anyone any ideas if there’s any money is recycling this?

You could sell it as junk on mercari or yahoo

Looking here, there's a Macbook from 2012 that sold for 15,000

Maybe this is refurbished? https://www.apple.com/jp/shop/refurbished

I browse there now and then, and have bought a thing or two over the years. I think many items have been returned for one reason or another--and I'm sure anything there has been checked really carefully. The more recent refurb phones may be trade ins.

Thanks for that. Even though the Mac is brick, it appears the wife isn't so keen on reselling because all the data is still on the Mac.

Well it seems to be a brand spanking new Mac book air M1, and seems to be so much better than my previous MacBook Pro.
The only thing I really wanted to get for it is an new MagSafe adaptor, as its a bit tooo light and and a case.

You've tried hooking to the new machine in disk mode? If that works, you can copy anything over and then overwrite the drive. (and secure multi-overwrite is part of Disk Utility) Also, if it's a corrupted disk that's bricked it, this may be a way to restore the disk, and machine.

An alternative would be to pull the drive and buy an enclosure to use it as an external/backup--if the rest of the machine is so kaput that it doesn't allow the drive to be accessed in disk mode then I think there's a good chance this would work. Then trash the rest, or sell it 'as is' for parts/junk. Or erase the drive this way and put it back in, again for sale.

Good info, thanks, it never even crossed my mind to enquire about credit from them. Definitely mentally bookmarked for when my current one conks out.

If you don't mind may I ask how much monthly and for how long?

You can choose anything you like up to 2 years, and we're paying just under 5000 a month.Pretty good and since its interest free, that makes it even easier to keep the Cash I have in the sub emergency fund for things like this.

Just such a waist as we all know there is some value in it. Aluminum cases and precious metals etc.

Presuming that it is an intel CPU Mac, then the simplest thing to do is to install
linux and use it as a linux machine. That way you can avoid the waste problem.
Linux is free software and is somewhat similar to Mac OS (they are both
unix-derived).
If the hard disk is broken then you can easily replace that with a new one for little
cost - or a 2.5" form factor SSD of you want to have an appreciable speed up.
It will be good to use so long as nothing major breaks (e.g. the screen).

Both Mac and Windows systems have this problem that they effectively force you to buy
a new machine every 6~7 years since they make the OS so heavy that old machines can
no longer run it or they withdraw OS support (including virus protection etc ), so millions
of computers end up going to landfill/reprocessing even though the hardware is still
perfectly capable of reading emails / watching youtube videos/ wordprocessing etc.
Until recently all the computers I had used were computers that other people threw out
- I simply installed linux on them. The computer I am writing this post on is 16 years old!
