Hi,
Anyone willing to share which stocks they are watching (ie, thinking about buying/looking for buying opportunities).
My watchlist at the moment includes:
Softbank: 9984 ソフトバンクグループ
Aji no moto (food): 2802 味の素
Personnel/hiring company: 2181 パーソルHD
Kubota: 6326 クボタ
Komatsu: 6301 コマツ
Eisai (drugs and farming chemicals): 6301 コマツ
These are stocks I have stuck on my watchlist after reading about them in financial articles here and there.
I always enjoy hearing about what others are thinking about.
Thanks!

Re: Stocks I'm watching
Passive investing Index funds only here.
If professional fund managers can't beat the market I don't see why I could, and it isolates me from emotional buy/sell decisions and minimizes trading and tax costs
I have however been considering maybe picking up some stocks from companies I like that have good stockholder benefits, but only with "spare cash"

I've been thinking about buying Rakuten stock for a while and finally did it this morning.

Probably not one of my wisest investments judging its performance so far.fools_gold wrote: ↑Wed Feb 28, 2018 1:36 am I've been thinking about buying Rakuten stock for a while and finally did it this morning.

Re: Stocks I'm watching
Does anyone else have any interesting stock ideas?
I mostly buy index funds, but they're so boring.
In addition to Rakuten, which I think is pretty undervalued, I also added some Mitsubishi UFG Bank (8306) today as it seems quite reasonable at the moment. My son loves Tomy cars, so I got some Takara Tomy too at my wife's request. They had a not so good earnings report recently and the share price fell off a cliff. It's a good company and you get a present (last year was 2 free toy cars) if you're holding 100 shares on 3/31.
I've also got an eye on National Grid (they run the electricity distribution network in the UK). The share price has taken a hit recently, so the dividend yield is now at 5.35%. It's available as an ADR on the US stock market (NGG).

Re: Stocks I'm watching
I am yet to own individual stocks, but I’d be very reluctant to buy one that gives presents n stuff to shareholders.
I’d rather see a marginally higher stock price, and the business be focused on being the best it can be at that.
Yes, I guess this eliminates a host of Japanese stocks from consideration. The gifting to shareholders seems that be a part of the group culture here, but if I am a shareholder I want to be a boss, not just one of the group!

Re: Stocks I'm watching
I read somewhere that about one third of Japanese companies do this. Apparently it's advantageous for the companies because they're classed as operating expenses rather than paid out from profits like dividends. I'd rather see the money put to better usesutebayashi wrote: ↑Thu Mar 15, 2018 11:29 pm I am yet to own individual stocks, but I’d be very reluctant to buy one that gives presents n stuff to shareholders.

too, but I don't let it put me off too much. Anyway, I know the cars are going to find a very good home.

I'm still pretty skeptical about picking and choosing stocks but I'm starting to consider running my own "buy & hold" portfolio of growth stocks to minimize turnover costs and defer taxation on capital gains.fools_gold wrote: ↑Thu Mar 15, 2018 4:25 pm Does anyone else have any interesting stock ideas?

Rakuten did look pretty good to me and I'm kind of tempted to give it a go: their P/E is pretty low and they're well diversified.
I'm not so sure about national grid though. Wouldn't owning an ADR of a UK company open you up to getting the dividends taxed in the UK and US before it even gets to japan?
Regarding gifts, it's a tough call alright. It's pretty common and it seems people like to take out stocks with a gift they'd use anyway. E.g. big kamera just gives you a gift card etc. If you're going to buy shit there anyway it's pretty much as good as cash... I suppose. There's a lot of gifts out there that might just make you spend more money than you're saving though. L-breath gives out a 30% off(? can't remember for sure) voucher that's good for up to 100,000 purchases, but what that means is people often buying a lot of shit they don't need.
