I have a reasonable comprehension of how the rules apply to heirs, however are Step Children considered in the equation?

There may be a difference as to whether they were formally adopted or not. I have run into problems a few times here with my stepkids for family allowance at work, etc., as I didn't (wasn't able to legally) formally adopt them.

Thanks.. In my case -

One parent remarried with new partner having adult kids.
Other parent is in defacto relationship with their new partner also having adult kids.

I guess with both of my parents re-marrying late in life and their new partners already having grown children so any future possible inheritance may be complicated to start with but was just wondering how that might play out for future tax implications. I wondered if I would end up shouldering the tax burden for the defacto relationship children who as far as I can see are not recognised under the tax system.

Thankfully the tax office in Japan will only see your portion of a foreign inheritance and tax it as thought it was the entire inheritance, resulting in much lower taxes for most people: https://www.retirejapan.com/blog/overse ... -in-japan/
