You need a margin account to short sell on any platform. Rakuten ->

Margin/Options accounts often require you to pass a skill-based test.
Regardless, probably not a great idea unless your Japanese is very strong. You want to be VERY sure about what you are doing.

I find the concept of short selling icky enough as it is and while its a valid financial strategy used by actual pros, its completely opposite to the ideas espoused by this site which is think long and safe.

If you buy a stock (long), you have a maximum of 100% downside risk, and unlimited upside potential gain.
If you short a stock, you have a maximum of 100% potential gain, and unlimited risk.
Seems a bad idea to me, although I do enjoy watching the cast do it on Billions

I think the original poster is asking, how to do it.
Not comments of what they should do.
Anybody shorted?

The first reply answered it. You need a separate application to apply for a margin account.

Indeed. And again I would stress caution.
Japanese brokers feature a lot of fantastic ways to lose money very quickly without much effort. Short-selling, binary options (illegal in most other countries), and FX futures are just a few excellent ways to lose your shirt.
