Wondering which Shigaku Kyosai (Private School Mutual Aid) services people on this forum have used, and what their experiences were.
I see a host of things are available, including loans, savings plans, additional pension/annuity plans, life assurance, discounts on travel and hotels, etc.

Now out of their system, but in the past I used various things. Stayed at their hotels off and on, and had extra insurance for quire a while--both life (for me, and a bit for the wife and kids), also some extra health coverage if any family had been hospitalized. One thing to note is that the life insurance cost goes up with age, it's not like buying a level term plan. I had other insurance, but I figured the payout on this one would be simplest if I died (fewest strings, least paperwork).
I borrowed money a couple times. The rate is low enough I thought I could invest and make money. Once was when the yen was around 80 or less and I wanted to buy dollars to lock in that rate (and then invest). That worked, but now I have a one holding that I bought at 78 which I don't want to sell due to the currency effect. Maybe someone can just inherit it...? These loans were for two million yen, IIRC, not a whole lot, but they were easy, I think I said that we were doing some home reforming. A simple sign up and maybe eight weeks later the money is in your account (so yeah, a delay, but otherwise very low hurdles to get the money).
A colleague borrowed more when they bought a house, but I don't know the details, limits, conditions, etc. I think when he retired a certain chunk of his taishokukin went to close out that loan.

The nice ryokan style hotel in Kyoto, a few Garden hotels in Japan (now they are getting a bit worn though). Did a ski trip to Biwako with the kids once. Also a dinner concert in Osaka, which was pretty good.
Emerald Green club was a great deal, now gone.
Fantastic penthouse in Waikiki, also now gone.
Full-on ningen dokku a few times. Then they stopped paying, and more recently it is back but they pay 50%.
Gunze sports club ¥1,100/visit.
Got extra 'cancer' insurance, cheap plan.
Investment plans look pretty weak, IMHO.
A loan when the yen was 80 would have been brilliant...

A belated thank you for these answers.
Helps me to realise the types of SK benefits out there.

We have used their extra insurance. Really pleased with it. They let my wife join when she was heavily pregnant and then gave us a decent payout because she had to have emergency C-section. Claiming it and receiving was really smooth. Took less than 2 weeks I believe.

We paid for regular childbirth, but got a "gift" of an amount almost equal to that. I forget if that was Kyosai or Kumiai though.Yossarian wrote: ↑Fri Aug 13, 2021 12:58 am We have used their extra insurance. Really pleased with it.
