If you keep it within your NISA limit, you can get free transactions (at least with SBI and Rakuten), and unlike the ETF pay no annual charge. No comment on whether it's an effective stragety though.
So there's no transaction costs for stocks etc. in the NISA? I had always wondered as I couldn't see them itemised anywhere in my SBI account...

Yes for SBI, Japanese stocks and foreign ETFs (but not general stocks) are fee-free in the NISA.
