Trading Discussion

Opening up a thread for discussions on our trades and plays. Since this isn't exactly investment in the spirit of this forum, I decided to leave it in General.

What are your plays this week?

Mine is roughly

Short term:
20% Corsair
20% PLTR
20% Atos

Long term holds:
20% NIO
20% AMD

I really want to get in on Baidu as well. Also I try to balance my portfolio by ensuring that at the end of each month I have a 50/50 split between stocks and ETFs.

Interesting you mention this cos I just asked about stock to ETF balance in the simple question thread.

I'm going to aim a little more conservative with my split at about 20/80 stocks to index funds.

I think it's extremely wise to go 80/20 index:stocks. I'm just trying my hand at chasing returns and I'm sure it will come back to bite me at some point.

Meme stocks have done me extremely well as long as I only held for a 10-20% gain and didn't get too greedy. I got burned hard on blackberry when I tried holding beyond 60% gains--ended up -50%.

Seems like BB could be a good long term investment actually. I'm going to look into them over the next few weeks in more detail.

Right now I'm about 15% stocks, 78% ETFs/CEFs, and 7% cash.

My stocks are my sandbox, generally bought as dividend payers rather than as 'trades' for gains. But I'm also not married to those, so I'll trade them when I find reason to. As dividend payers, these probably tend toward the 'value' side of things, and a couple REITs are in this group, too.

(I keep repeating to myself that) the majority of the ETFs are long term holds, with a reasonably strong growth/tech bias. Small caps have had a good few months now, and I've noticed that I'm underweight there. One of the longest held is QQQ, peripheral additions last year were OGIG and SMH, and then ARKF just last month. I don't feel comfortable betting on individual stocks, but due to overlap I have quite a lot of the FAANG stocks. The number of stocks a fund holds is something I eyeball when deciding--sometimes I sell myself on breadth, other times I like something narrower (30-50 names).

With the big rally last night, 1yr is up 14%, 2yr is 25%.

I am really starting to get interested in Japanese individual stocks (again play money not investments). I recently bought Takeda and Tokyu, the latter has done really well plus the dividend rate is pretty good. Wondering if anyone on this forum has any Japanese individual stocks and if so how do they feel about them? Seems like a strong value play and residents here have an advantage in that they actually know the companies.

I bought some at random a few years ago when Abenomics was in full swing. Basically did a screen for decent dividend, earnings per share, and not too much debt. One of them is my best performer by far and up by almost 700%. Total fluke though.

I do like dividends though so will keep buying US and Japanese dividend payers as my side portfolio. Hoping to get up to 1m a year to supplement our pensions :)

What are some of the dividend payers that you like? If you don't mind disclosing!

I don't know anything about the Japanese market, but I'm probably doing myself a big disservice by actively avoiding them just because of the stigma that Japan doesn't necessarily have a good image of growth.

I just did a filter by dividend yields and, no joke, there are some big tickers that are paying some pretty hefty dividends. Like Japan Post at 5.87%. JT pays almost 8%. It almost seems too good to be true so I wonder what the catch is. But it is not like JT or JP would go bankrupt as they are practically government entities. :geek: :geek: :geek: need to do more research on this.
