Hi I’m about to start investing in Vanguard etfs however some seem not to be available here in japan. Do some have different codes here or are some just unavailable?

For example Vanguard 500 Index Fund Admiral Shares (VFIAX) doesn’t seem to be on the code list here?

Many thanks

VFIAX is Vanguard's S&P500 mutual fund and isn't available through Japanese brokers. What you want is the ETF version VOO, which you can buy at Japanese brokers with access to American stocks.

Are you US?

The yes/no to that Q makes a difference.

There is also a Japanese fund tracking that index

https://emaxis.jp/fund/253266.html
Management fee is .0880%. Tiny, but still doesn't beat VFIAX 0.04 or VOO's 0.03%.

However, you can buy it in yen, so don't have to worry about currency exchange, and its eligible for NISA/iDeCo.

Oh, I didn't know they had created ETF version of the new funds. Makes sense. Here's the official link

https://maxis.mukam.jp/

I used to buy their TOPIX fund back in 2014 before eMaxis slim was a thing. Worth bearing in mind the ETFs pay out dividends, so the mutual fund versions are more suited to long term investing.

Hi there !

Sorry to bump this thread up but I had a question relative to Vanguard ETF and Vanguard in japan in general...

Even if the vanguard ETF VT and VOO have a small management fees, and with all the good we know about vanguard indexes, for a non US citizen is it still worth investing in those compare to the japanese non ETF equivalent (I'm thinking about the rakuten x vanguard total index or the eMaxis Slim ones for instance) ?

I still see a lot of europeans living here investing in those ETF funds but to me it feels a bit disadvantageous because of the double taxation (US + JP), the indivisible share (so the entry investment might be a bit steep and not customizable) and the absence of a DRiP (at least with rakuten).

What you think ?

Subsidiary question :
What would be a good non ETF equivalent of the vanguard BND ?

Thanks a lot if you can enlighten me on those points.
