Sorry if this this already been addressed but I have a 5k GBP cheque from HMRC I need to pay into my UK Barclays a/c. Is there a safer way than posting the cheque and a pay-in slip to someone in the UK to pay in for me? No doubt a stupid question but is there anything I can do with the cheque in Japan?

Send it to the bank registered delivery? I'm not aware of any bank you could pay that into here in Japan.

I can just *post* it to my branch? I never knew that.

"Pay in sterling cheques up to £1,000 each..." Unfortunately mine's too big.
[That's what she said].

If you are account holder, SMBC Trust Bank Prestia will let you deposit it for 5500 yen fee, or lower if you have higher balance there.

Another option could be to summon your patience and see if you can get HMRC to send it via bank transfer instead.

Happened to me a couple of years ago, had 2 PPI claims with Barclays bank, the first time they paid me into my account, the second time they sent me a cheque. I called them to ask why they did that, the girl said "my supervisor says you should be able to pay into your bank in Japan". Yeah, right, she obviously hasn't been here.
So, I sent it back recorded delivery to my branch. Note though Japan post recorded is crap. It get's there but never get a delivered notice. EMS is more expensive but reliable.

Happened to me six months ago. I posted it to a relative with paying-in instructions. Not ideal.
HMRC already had my bank account details. I'd reconfirmed these when applying for and subsequently chasing a heavily delayed refund. They signed off their letter accompanying the cheque saying I might find it more convenient to receive money via bank transfer, but unfortunately they didn't have my bank details.

Many thanks for all your replies. I sent it registered post to my Barclays branch. I wrote my branch code and a/c number on the back of the cheque and in a covering letter. It was in my account 9 days later!
