Vanguard pulls out of Japan

Thankfully I think most of their products marketed at individuals here are either US-listed ETFs or Japanese products that wrap the US ETFs, so are not affected.

It's a bit disappointing that they feel the market is more suited to institutional investors. So was the US market, when Vanguard was founded. It seems that founding a mutual fund that genuinely puts its investors interests first requires an act of selflessness from someone in the position to do it.

In the meantime I guess we'll have to rely on competition to keep the costs down. This is probably good news for the likes of eMaxis slim, I just hope they don't feel like they can relax their competition on cost with a big player like Vanguard retreating.

In Japan, Vanguard said it will no longer actively market products or distribute new ones.
Does this mean the funds will be delisted? My concern mostly relates to the Rakuten wrapped funds. My iDeco is currently 100% VT.

Thank you very much.

It seems nothing will change.

I am prehaps unclear about why they were physically present in Japan to begin with.

Interesting. There are unfortunately lots of reasons for financial companies to avoid using Japan as a hub for Asia but in this case Vanguard is giving up even on a presence in Japan to directly serve individual investors. Here’s an announcement from a few years ago about what they were hoping to do here:

Index-fund pioneer Vanguard faces challenges in Japan because it’s unwilling to pay commissions to fund distributors to have them sell its products, a model that’s still rife across Asia and that ultimately adds costs for investors, said Yan Pu, head of portfolio review for Asia at the money manager. “This is a tough environment,” Pu said. “But we’re actually committed to the region...”
