He is a question for any fellow Canucks on the board.

It seems according to the sources below I can apply for OAS Pension abroad? I lived in Canada until I was 25, and worked many different jobs, paying into the system.

Does anyone else have experience with what benefits can be claimed while living abroad?

Not sure what you mean by paying into OAS. The system is based on years residency in Canada, not contributions. It doesn’t seem you’re qualified, as you need to live in Canada for at least 10 years from age 18.

So your option is to go thru the pension agreement to gain credits from one system to put into another system. Are you contributing to Japan’s nenkin? I phoned Ottawa a long time ago, and they were quite affirmative on this agreement. You can apply to have your contributions to Nenkin credited to OAS or vice-versa. However, it doesn’t seem it’s a guaranteed thing whether they approve it.

I’ve got around 27 years in Japan’s nenkin but like you, only a few years in OAS. I think I will make further enquiries once I approach age 65 and then do the math – will I collect more by putting my Japanese contributions toward OAS or vice versa? Or by collecting the two pensions separately?
