About Sendai, is it fair to say it is the kind of place that is more for living than being a tourist in? I visited once and didn't think it was a great tourist town, but can quite imagine that it is a lovely place to live. I lived in Sheffield in the UK for a few years and that felt much the same - lovely place to live but not an essential stop on the tourist trail!
That is precisely what I say about Sendai all the time: great place to live, have no idea why anyone would want to visit without friends in town
Also lived in Sheffield for a number of years!

One thing I’ve recently discovered is the utility of the Shinkansen in making far flung areas of Japan accessible. You could live in Shizuoka, Sendai or Gunma, for example, and still only have about an hour commute into Tokyo for shopping or work.
