Have you lived in Japan before?
No, I've just visited a couple of times as a tourist over the years. Maybe 5 or 6 times.

So you are considering retiring in a country you have never lived in before, have no roots in, and where you don't speak the language?

You are braver than I am! :o

I suggest stating here for a longer period, for a month or so, before making that decision. Try and rent a monthly mansion or something and see how everyday life in Japan compares to the the romantic view/vacation version.

At least two years, if not five :?

Yeah, the longer the better. I was just thinking that, if the OP is still working, then the maximum he or she may be able to get off work to try and experience something closer to 'real Japan' may be a month or 6 weeks.
I think we both agree that the 'plan' sounds a bit flawed... I can't imagine rocking up in Chiba or Shizuoka or somewhere aged 60/65, with no support structure here and figuring out how to deal with all the intricacies of life.

I would watch a TV series with this plot! :D

I guess I forgot to mention I am 32 years old :). As a student we used to have these long breaks between semesters so I stayed there two times for 2 months straight and the other visits were like 4 weeks each. Will look for a job there next year and move and see how it goes. It helps that I have passive income from stocks

I'd say culture shock lasts from between month 4 to a year. If you survive a year, you're probably fine 😄
