The employee housing subsidy is pretty big, and should be milked for all it's worth if you have it. It can play a big part in accelerating your stash-accumulation. I enjoyed this perk for several years via my wife's company, which covered about 70% of our rent, but since she decided to quit we've been paying 100% out of pocket, pushing housing from <10% to around 25% of my total spend. Even though I'm a seishain myself at a big company, each company has its own policies, and I'm only eligible if the company forces me to move city for an assignment.

I'm no seishain at the moment, but the company pays 60% of the rent (2LDK with 1 parking spot on a two-story building), so the rent is around 11% of our monthly salary (utility bills aren't included).

~15% of household income (including parking; excluding bills).

2LDK with 2 parking spaces. Close to trains, underground, expressway, but also parks and mountain trails.

A Hint for getting Cheap Rent - If you're not superstitious...
Ask around the realtors for Units that have had someone die in them. They may not be on open display...
Japanese Landlords are obliged to disclose that someone died in the unit to the next two renters.
Many Japanese will not take such a unit, but you can save a significant amount if you don't mind...
The landlord is probably highly motivated to rent it to anyone to get over the two renters restriction, and get it back on the market at the market rent.
You could get a 20% or more discount on the market rent...
Don't Mind! - Take the discount and put the rent saved in your iDECO!

70k on the outskirts of the 23 Tokyo wards. 1K "mansion" which is really all I need at this stage of my life. That's give or take around 25% of my income after tax. Utilities are another 10-12k, which is still under 30%. Putting the rest into investments and working towards a house deposit.
