Aeon has no contract term so you can show your driving license only if you want they don't care.
I loved Aeon. They were so relaxed about everything. Even let me use my Japanese name (alias) and pay with a credit card in my official name.
Then from this April they just reduced all their fees. Very happy with the company and the service so far.
Do you have to use their own app for making calls, texting etc? I switched to Rakuten Mobile but unable to use the native phone app for calling, messaging etc. (extremely annoying)
No, just using it as normal. I'm on the Docomo network apparently.

I think phone calls are half price if you use the app.

UQ mobile doesn't require an app to use the "free" phone calls included in each plan, you are also able to set up visual voicemail on UQ (although you have to pay for some extra service to enable it). Not having to use an app to make phone calls, the ability to tether and visual voicemail were all reasons I chose UQ instead of other MVNOs (although I think technically UQ isn't an MVNO cause it's just cheap AU).

Time to head to the UQ Mobile shop
Any network issues etc.?

Living in Hiroshima, I haven't had any network or internet speed issues ... but I can't say what it's likely in more densely populated places.
