Anyone well versed in the economic theory at hand here? What can holders do to maximize profit in this situation? Play out the prisoners dillemma and just not sell?

I mean, the shorts need to be covered in the next 3-4 days.
Trading restrictions will remain in some form through Friday trading.
I would guess there will be a runup---massive profit taking-----then a sharp drop.
....
Holding through the weekend would be insanity IMO, however, all traditional rules are mute considering the unprecedented events over the last 24 hours.
If you decide to hold over the weekend, be mentally be prepared for the worst. It is a super ballsy move.

I think I just threw up in my mouth.
In summary, if you use Robinhood, you can sell shares of GME, BB, AMC, etc but you cannot buy them via Robinhood. (Oh oh)
We did not do this at the behest of anyone even though some of our partners are losing their shorts (literally).
We did this because we have financial commitments.
We do not have a liquidity crisis.
Maybe tomorrow we can remove this restriction.
I am a touch skeptical but this sure is dramatic. Can’t wait to buckle in and watch the open.

IMO we should be more worriedd about IBKR and its actions.
IBKR fills order for Rakuten and SBI apparently.
They are also the largest online broker in America.

Rakuten has already disabled all buy orders for GME. They did it this morning.

A chairman of IBKR has also come unto CNBC and they left a portion of the interview available for free on youtube.
When asked: did you do it to protect yourself or the traders/clients? (NDR: that's a really nice and easy question am I right?)
He answered: We did it mostly to protect ourselves. [nervous laugh] and the clients of course. But mostly to protect the market.
In portions I saw on Twitter from someone filming his TV with his phone, he also says that "this stock [GME] is worth US$17" and so people shouldn't be allowed to buy and drive the price so far up. I didn't see but people on WSB quote him as saying "he will reopen buy orders once the price falls down close to $17".
It's a new wild west on Wall Street these days. While a short squeeze is not something unprecedented, the response to it is.
Also, a lot of noise around WSB and the new subreddits around it are really just people looking for tickers to organize pump and dump operations. It's just crazy all around.
while some articles talk about the SEC may have to investigate Reddit, US politicians seem to be calling for investigating Robinhood.
Anyway, I explained what I was doing to my girlfriend, and I won't be sleeping tonight I guess.

I had already scooped out my initial investment and some profit before the drama, however...
I have 27 shares of AMC @ $3.09 and 23 shares of BB @ 15.50 remaining. No GME here.
