I use cash a lot, so my wallet is fat, because it contains coins. Also a lot of bills. It's not unusual for me to have 50'000 yen or more in it. On top of that, the usual suspects: suica, gaijin card, health insurance card, cash card from the bank, driver's license, and a couple debit cards.

Not sure how so many of you get away with so little cash on you. I've given up trying to pay with cards in Japan almost a decade ago

No cards for me, either (tho my wife uses them). I never tried to switch. When my cash goes down to ¥10k or below, I withdraw another 30k and am good for about two weeks.

But as I said above, coins/bills go in a (front) pocket), not in the wallet in back.

I always want to use a card (hangover from my airmile freak days) but recently it has become much easier. Even before the cashless push more and more places were taking cards, and since it began the number of card-friendly establishments has ballooned.

I find it's rarer not to be able to pay by card now

2 Credit cards (Rakuten one doubles as point card + Edy), Bank ATM/Debit Card, Line Pay Card, Zairyu Card, 3 IC cards (because in Fukuoka there are three issuers and they all have their own points...), Waon Point Card, Driving Licence, Car Share + ETC Card, Health Insurance Card, 10-30K yen.

That's 13 cards...

If I stopped caring about points / cashback and prioritized convenience / time (maybe something I should look into?) I could probably cut it down to 5 cards (Credit / ATM / Zairyu / IC / Insurance) + take the car related cards when actually using them. Realistically I'd probably leave the driving licence in for convenience, plus it's more useful for ID than the Zairyu card.

About ￥20,000 cash, Amazon Mastercard (1% back on all purchases, 2.5% on Amazon with free Amazon Prime) and the Residence card/Health insurance card combo. Oh and a couple of business cards just in case I find myself needing to hand one out and I don't have my card holder with me.

I am currently going cashless, so unless I know in advance that I need to pay something in cash, I don't carry cash around. Beside that the usual stuff:
2 credit cards (company/private), bank card, driving license, gym membership card, residence card, security card for alarm system at work and 3 point cards.

Real leather, too many cards and NEVER put coins in it, I always have coins in my pocket
hate those big fat wallets, its got to fit easily in my pocket

I have pretty much gone cashless by the end of the month after my wife and kids have finished off with me.

I have a squarish leather zip up one by a maker in Saitama called Beau Dessin (plugging them because it’s a small business and fantastic wallet!). It holds my bills, work & zairyu IDs, trainIC card, cash and credit card, has a change pocket, and a keychain. It’s about 2cm thick and probably about 7 cm square. I got it years ago from a shop in my old neighborhood in Tokyo (the maker is in Saitama) and couldn’t be happier with it. Having everything in one place means I won’t forget my keys, cash, train cards etc

I tend to use credit card when buying from chain stores and cash at local businesses since they have to pay a commission on card transactions.

Also, it’s one of the earlier things I bought as I was shifting more and more to focusing on buying long lasting, handmade goods made by artisans/companies I want to support.

That said, I do use a super slim Montbell nylon tri-fold when traveling since I don’t need as many cards and keys.
