Yeah stay at home housewives are technically retired, with three meals a day plus afternoon nap, as the saying goes! ;)

RetireJapan wrote: Mon May 05, 2025 7:51 am There was a bit of a FIRE boom in Japan a couple of years ago (around when Atsugiri Jason put his first book out). Quite a bit of interest on the talk shows, etc.

(that one with the mole puppets had an episode featuring really weird FIRE people that ate grass from public parks, etc.)

But everyone seems to have moved on now.
I noticed that a lot of the FIRE blogs also recommended emigrating abroad to places with lower cost of living too. There seems to be a school of thought whereby the Japanese government will lock down people’s bank accounts in the face of economic collapse or something.

If you search for “FIRE” c/w “海外移住” you get a quite a good selection of how to FIRE and escape abroad blogs.
Well. Moving abroad is possibly the only sure fire way to stop the neighbors talking if you retire early.

Not for me, but also not surprised to see Malaysia getting a lot of attention there. Money will go a long way and relatively well organized. Nice people in my experience.

Oh Malaysia is definitely a great place to retire. Nice people, great food, good location for traipsing around SE Asia or hopping over to Kiwi and Aussieland… One downside for me is the arctic level aircon temperature settings in their public transport. ;-)

Pre-FIRE, I think Penang was a common destination for japanese retirees back in the 90s and before.

My wry smile has rarely been wryer..
Isn't there a word for the depression that kicks in when your husband retires and is suddenly at home all day? She's probably got that to look forward to...

I'm not equating this to your situation, just commenting that she may not have it all figured out after all.

It seems to be implicit within 熟年離婚.
Either retirement or empty nest/imminent retirement being the catalyst.

My marriage is as strong as my bank balance! (And I suspect index linked..)..
